Camilla Broe has not denied that she at some point learned of the criminal activities her former friend ran in connection with his investment and antique firm. She was hired as consultant and her job was to counsel the employees on wearing the right kind of clothes for business meetings in Europe. However at some point she learned that the firm was a front for a drug smuggling operation.
The charges against her is based on whether she went to the police fast enough after learning of the crimes. There is no question about that she helped the police to name the participants in the drug ring. It was presented as evidence during the trial. She went to such an extend that she offered herself as undercover agent against the criminals.
So the obvious question for a young person who is interested in living as exchange student for a year is:
"What do I do if you witness or learn of a crime."
Well, the lesson learned from this trial is that the only option is to run and run fast back to your own country. Do not offer your testimony to any foreign authority - otherwise you end up on standing trial.
If you choose to study abroad your stay could be a loose-loose situation which can affect your life for years into your adulthood.
The trial against Camilla Broe was started 10 years after her the last known connection of any of the criminals and it took the courts in two countries about 3 years to reach the verdict that the charges were met with the statutes of limitation.
Do you want to take such a risk?
